A circumambulation is a ritual
walking around a sacred object. Spend a day getting to better know the
place we call Ithaca.
-
Walk roughly 7 miles through some
fascinating parts of Ithaca.
-
Learn to identify some common
Ithaca plants.
-
Learn to identify some of
the city’s different architectural styles.
-
Sing a song?
-
Try to imagine a time when
trilobites scurried down Tioga Street.
-
Seek out signs of the
Underground Railroad.
-
Walk reverently along each of
the 3 major creeks that flow through the city towards the lake.
-
Meet the Poet Laureate of
Ithaca.
-
Visit each of the Ithaca
neighborhoods and try to distinguish between their subtle tastes.
-
Share stories about your
connections to this place.
-
Figure out where your drinking
water comes from. And your electricity?
-
Meet other people who want to
get to know this place better.
-
Draw your own map of Ithaca.
Walking Terrain:

A note about
this walk:
This is a stripped-down version of other Place Odyssey
and the Art of Walking trips. I wanted to offer some trips that would be
lighter in nature (in terms of logistics) and therefore easier for both me
and participants since the exchange of money wouldn’t need to be involved
and enormous amounts of my time wouldn’t be spent figuring out details of
food, shelter and coordination with other organizations. It will still be a
unique and wonderful experience and will provide a taste of what
is involved with other Place Odyssey walking trips, simply with fewer "frills."
